According to foreign media, Russia has made a request for consultations with WTO on the steel and aluminum tariff policy launched by the United States.

At the request of the Russian government, the World Trade Organization (WTO) issued a statement saying that the Trump administration’s decision should be “protectionist measures” based on the definition of the WTO, which could lead to retaliatory tariffs by American trading partners.

Previously, China, India, and the EU have defined the US tariff policy as “protectionist measures”.

WTO’s Russian delegation said that the request for consultations did not mean that the dispute was resolved under WTO. He said: “This is not a” dispute “with complete meaning, but more likely to be a counterattack measure in the future in full compliance with WTO rules.

President Trump signed an order in early March to levy a comprehensive tax on imported steel and aluminum products, with a tax rate of 25% and 10% respectively. At the same time, the White House allows Canadian and Mexican products to be exempted from new duties.
