310 vs 310S: What's the Difference?
The distinction between Grade 310 and Grade 310S lies primarily in carbon content, which directly affects weldability, high-temperature performance, and corrosion resistance. Understanding this difference is critical for selecting the right material for your application.
| Property | SS 310 (UNS S31000 / 1.4841) | SS 310S (UNS S31008 / 1.4845) |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon Content | 0.15% max (higher carbon) | 0.08% max (low carbon) |
| Weldability | Moderate – carbide precipitation risk at 425-900°C | Excellent – reduced sensitization |
| High-Temperature Strength | Higher creep strength at extreme temps | Slightly lower, but superior long-term stability |
| Intergranular Corrosion | Susceptible after welding | Resistant – suitable for welded structures |
| Continuous Service Temp | Up to 1150°C | Up to 1100°C |
| Typical Applications | Furnace parts, radiant tubes (non-welded) | Welded furnace components, heat exchangers, exhaust systems |
| Price Difference | ~5-8% lower | ~5-8% premium |
| Recommendation | For non-welded high-stress parts | For welded assemblies and most applications |

High-Temperature Performance
310S is engineered for sustained operation in extreme heat. Its exceptional oxidation resistance stems from the high chromium content, which forms a stable protective oxide scale at elevated temperatures.
Maximum Service Temperature Comparison
Oxidation Resistance
Forms a self-healing chromium oxide layer that provides exceptional protection against scaling and oxidation up to 1100°C in air and oxidizing atmospheres.
Creep Strength
High nickel content (19-22%) maintains structural integrity under sustained mechanical stress at elevated temperatures, reducing deformation over time.
Carburization Resistance
Excellent resistance to carburization in hydrocarbon-rich environments, making it ideal for furnace tubes and petrochemical processing equipment.
Thermal Cycling
310S tolerates thermal cycling better than most austenitic grades, though 310 (higher carbon) offers marginally better creep resistance in steady-state conditions.
Important: In sulfur-containing atmospheres above 600°C, oxidation resistance may be reduced. For such environments, consider Grade 314 (higher silicon) or consult our technical team for application-specific recommendations.
Application of 310s Stainless Steel Coil:
310S heat-resistant stainless steel is a variant of 310 stainless steel, S for special purposes. Domestic grade 0Cr25Ni20, American grade 310S, or 2520, duplex stainless steel, is used for high-temperature furnace tube manufacturing. 310S stainless steel pipe has good oxidation and corrosion resistance, because of a higher percentage of chromium and nickel, 310s have a much better creep strength and can continue working at high temperatures, with good high-temperature resistance.
310S stainless steel maximum operating temperature of 1200°C, continuous use temperature of 1150°C. Uses: Exhaust pipes, microwave ovens, high-temperature furnace gallbladders, cremators, and other steels that require heat resistance, high heat/high-temperature contact parts.

FAQ
What is 310S stainless steel?
310S (UNS S31008 / EN 1.4845) is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel containing 24-26% chromium and 19-22% nickel. It is specifically designed for high-temperature applications up to 1100°C, offering excellent oxidation resistance, creep strength, and carburization resistance. The “S” designation indicates a low-carbon variant (C ≤ 0.08%) with superior weldability compared to Grade 310.
What is the difference between 310 and 310S?
The primary difference is carbon content: 310 has a maximum of 0.15% carbon, while 310S is limited to 0.08%. This makes 310S more weldable and resistant to intergranular corrosion after welding. 310 offers slightly higher creep strength at extreme temperatures, while 310S is preferred for welded assemblies and most general high-temperature applications.
What temperature can 310S withstand?
310S can operate continuously at temperatures up to 1100°C (2012°F) in oxidizing atmospheres. For intermittent service, the recommended maximum is approximately 1035°C (1895°F). In sulfur-containing environments, the practical limit may be reduced to around 600-750°C.
Is 310S magnetic?
310S is non-magnetic in the annealed condition, like all austenitic stainless steels. However, cold working (such as cold rolling) can induce partial martensitic transformation, resulting in slight magnetism. The level of magnetism depends on the degree of cold work and thickness reduction.
What is the MOQ and lead time for 310S coil?
Our minimum order quantity is 1 ton. For in-stock material, lead time is 7-15 days from deposit confirmation. For production orders (custom thickness/width/surface), lead time is 25-35 days. Sample orders below 1 ton are negotiable with a freight surcharge. Payment terms: T/T (30% deposit, 70% before shipment) or L/C at sight.
Do you provide EN 10204 3.1 MTC with 310S coils?
Do you provide EN 10204 3.1 MTC with 310S coils?
What surface finishes are available for 310S cold rolled coil?
We offer six surface finishes:
2B (standard, most common), 2D (for deep drawing), BA (bright annealed, reflective), No.4 (brushed), HL (hairline), and 8K (mirror polished).
For 310S high-temperature applications, 2B is the most commonly selected finish. PVC protective film (70-micron white PE) can be applied to protect the surface during transit.
What is 310S stainless steel used for?
310S is primarily used in high-temperature applications including: furnace components, heat treatment baskets, petrochemical reformer tubes, exhaust manifolds, boiler parts, incinerator liners, flare stacks, and heat exchanger tubes. It is also used in food processing equipment requiring both heat and corrosion resistance.
310S vs 316L: which is better for high temperature?
For high-temperature applications, 310S is significantly superior. It withstands continuous service up to 1100°C vs 316L’s 760°C. The higher Cr (24-26% vs 16-18%) and Ni (19-22% vs 10-14%) content in 310S provides much better oxidation and creep resistance. However, 316L is better for corrosion resistance in chloride environments and is more cost-effective for lower-temperature applications.
What standards does 310S comply with?
Our 310S cold rolled coils comply with multiple international standards: ASTM A240/A240M (USA), EN 10088-2 (Europe), JIS G4305 (Japan), GB/T 4237 (China). Material Test Certificates (MTC) are provided per EN 10204 3.1 (or 3.2 on request). Dual or multi-standard certification is available upon request.
