Available Temper Conditions
301 stainless steel is specified per ASTM A666, which defines standard temper conditions based on cold reduction percentage. The temper range is 301’s primary advantage — no other austenitic grade achieves such a wide strength range through cold working.
| Temper | Cold Reduction (approx.) | Typical Application |
|---|---|---|
| Annealed | 0% | Deep drawing, severe forming |
| 1/4 Hard | ~20% | Moderate forming + moderate strength |
| 1/2 Hard | ~40% | Springs, clips, brackets |
| 3/4 Hard | ~60% | High-strength springs, structural parts |
| Full Hard | ~70% | Maximum strength springs, reinforcement |
| Extra Hard* | >70% | Ultra-high strength applications (commercial designation, not ASTM A666 standard temper) |
For detailed temper selection guidance, hardness values, and forming recommendations, see our 301 stainless steel aggregation page.

Key Point: 301 in full hard condition achieves tensile strength of 1,275 MPa — more than double the annealed value. This work-hardening response is why 301 coil is the preferred material for high-strength spring and stamping applications.

About 301 Stainless Steel Questions
What thickness and width are available for 301 cold rolled coil?
We supply 301 cold rolled coil in thicknesses from 0.2mm to 3.0mm and widths from 600mm to 1,500mm. Standard widths include 1,000mm, 1,219mm, 1,250mm, and 1,500mm. Custom widths are available through our slitting service — minimum slit width is 30mm. Thickness tolerances comply with ASTM A480M (see the Available Sizes table above for detailed tolerance data).
What temper conditions are available for 301 coil?
All ASTM A666 standard tempers are available: Annealed, 1/4 Hard, 1/2 Hard, 3/4 Hard, and Full Hard. Extra Hard (commercial designation, beyond ASTM A666) is also available on request.
What is the MOQ and lead time for 301 coil?
Minimum order quantity is 1 ton. For in-stock material, lead time is 7–15 days from deposit confirmation. For production orders with custom thickness, width, or temper, lead time is 25–35 days. Sample orders below 1 ton are negotiable with a freight surcharge. Payment terms: T/T (30% deposit, 70% before shipment) or L/C at sight.
Do you provide EN 10204 3.1 MTC with 301 coil?
Yes. Every shipment includes an EN 10204 3.1 Material Test Certificate at no additional cost. The MTC contains heat number, actual chemical composition values, mechanical property test results, and dimensional inspection data. For third-party verification, EN 10204 3.2 MTC certified by SGS, BV, or TÜV is available on request. REACH and RoHS compliance declarations are available for European buyers.
What is the difference between 301 and 304 coil?
301 has lower chromium (16–18% vs 18–20%) and nickel (6–8% vs 8–10.5%) content than 304, giving it lower corrosion resistance but significantly higher work-hardening capability. In full hard condition, 301 achieves tensile strength up to ~1,275 MPa vs ~1,100 MPa for 304. 301 is preferred for high-strength spring and structural applications; 304 is preferred for general corrosion resistance. See our detailed 304 vs 301 comparison for more information.
Can 301 coil be slit to custom widths?
Yes. Our slitting service can process 301 coil to any width from 30mm to the full coil width. Slitting tolerance is ±0.1mm for widths ≤ 100mm and ±0.2mm for widths > 100mm. Slit coils can be supplied on custom inner diameters (300mm, 400mm, 500mm, 508mm, or 610mm) to fit your stamping or roll-forming equipment. Edge quality options: slit edge (standard) or deburred edge (on request).
What surface finishes are available for 301 cold rolled coil?
Five standard surface finishes are available: 2B (most common for temper material), 2D (for deep drawing), BA (bright annealed, reflective), No.4 (brushed satin), and HL (hairline). For 301 temper material (1/4 hard and above), 2B is the standard and most readily available finish. BA finish is typically available only in annealed condition. PVC protective film (70-micron white PE) can be applied to protect the surface during transit and stamping.
Is 301 stainless steel coil magnetic?
301 is austenitic and non-magnetic in the annealed condition. However, cold working (the process that creates 1/4 hard through full hard tempers) transforms some austenite to martensite, making temper-condition 301 progressively more magnetic as hardness increases. Full hard 301 is noticeably magnetic. This is normal and does not indicate a quality problem.
